JPMorgan Chase Demands Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Main Office Admission

The banking leader has notified staff members moving into its recently built corporate base in Manhattan that they have to submit their biological identifiers to access the multi-billion skyscraper.

Change from Optional to Required

The banking corporation had previously planned for the collection of biometric data at its recently opened tower to be optional.

Nevertheless, staff of the leading financial institution who have started operations at the new headquarters since last month have been sent emails stating that biometric entry was now "required".

The Technology Behind Entry

Biometric access requires employees to submit their hand geometry to enter access portals in the lobby instead of swiping their access passes.

Building Specifications and Capacity

The corporate tower, which allegedly cost $3bn to build, will in time function as a workplace for 10,000 staff members once it is completely filled later this year.

Safety Justification

The financial company declined to comment but it is believed that the implementation of biometric data for admission is designed to make the facility better protected.

Alternative Access Methods

There are exceptions for some employees who will still be able to use a ID card for entry, although the standards for who will use more standard badge entry remains undefined.

Complementary Digital Tools

In addition to the introduction of biometric readers, the organization has also introduced the "JPMC Work" mobile app, which serves as a virtual ID and hub for worker amenities.

The app permits users to handle guest registration, use indoor maps of the building and schedule food from the building's nineteen restaurant options.

Industry-Wide Trends

The deployment of tighter entry controls comes as American companies, particularly those with major presence in the city, look to enhance safety following the incident of the top executive of one of the US's largest health insurers in summer.

The executive, the head of the healthcare company, was killed in the incident not far from JP Morgan's offices.

Future Expansion Possibilities

It is not known if JP Morgan plans to implement physical identifier entry for employees at its offices in other major financial centres, such as London.

Employee Tracking Developments

The action comes within controversy over the use of systems to track workers by their organizations, including tracking physical presence metrics.

Previously, all JP Morgan workers on hybrid work schedules were directed they have to report to the physical location five days a week.

Leadership Viewpoint

The company's leader, the financial executive, has described the company's recently opened skyscraper as a "beautiful physical manifestation" of the organization.

The executive, one of the world's most powerful bankers, this week warned that the chance of the financial markets facing a downturn was far greater than many market participants thought.
